Having a hardware wallet is mandatory if you are holding more than a few hundred dollars worth of coins. I chose the Ledger Nano over the Trezor because it looks better and supports more coins. Both Trezor and Ledger have had some security issues but they were quickly patched so I'm not too worried. I used to store most of my tokens on exchanges or MyEtherWallet but having peace of mind definitely makes a Ledger worth it.
